Lotus Development Corporation, the makers of Notes, refers to Notes as a document database, but don't let this terminology mislead you. Notes is not a traditional database. It's more useful to think of Notes as a way of organizing documents and making them accessible to groups of people.
Unlike a traditional database, which requires you to break information into discrete data fragments (primary key, foreign key), Lotus Notes uses the document as the fundamental unit of information. As you know if you've worked with databases, data doesn't have any meaning outside the context of it's database. A document, on the other hand, can stand on its own.
